The full book title is: “DreamBoats: A Rare Look at Small Boats in Light of the Heritage of Seafaring Peoples: Memories, Explanation and Innovation with Coastal Craft, Junks, Dhows, Outriggers & More…in the eyes of an old salt.” Sounds like fun, eh?

There aren’t any general-audience books about the exotic sailboats of sea-faring peoples (and only a couple specialized academic treatises). There sure aren’t any on how 3rd World methods might help the average backyard boater. This is about the only place you can learn a LOT about some amazing, robust, elegant, useful sail rigs and boat concepts, and clear up a lot of myth and mystery about how and why they work. –Junks, dhows, outriggers: we got ’em.

Richard Carsen, who is 85+ years old, traveled the world with the Navy, keeping an eye out for nifty little local craft as he went. After retiring from the service, he kept traveling, working in boatyards around the globe, making little boats the local way, on the cheap. These are boat concepts by the People, for the People. We sometimes don’t realize that many Western boat concepts come down from the elite who made boats to make big profits, to be used with expendable crew. 3rd World boats are meant to keep families together, and for average guys to be able to make and maintain them by eye. There’s a lot to learn from these boats, that we never knew about. They aren’t just ‘funny-looking’ boats.

Richard wrote of his experiences with, and ideas about, indigenous boats in the little magazine “Messing About in Boats.” This book is a compilation of a couple dozen of Carsen’s articles and drawings as they appeared in “MAIB.”
