Team OYB Road Trip: Cali or Bust!
June 02, 2009

Adventure is our middle name.

[This the first Article in a 10-post series.]

Our family is driving to California on June 6 on a road trip! (We hope to return by the 26th.)

We'll visit my uncles in Hollywood and Reno plus friends in the Bay Area.

And we'll see the sights along the way.

We're not driving on freeways. (Exhausting! Numbing!)

We'll search for nifty small town action hither and yon.

I know that we'll see mostly blight, despair and waste. But there is still a lot of never-say-die indie spirit out there! There are small towns that keep the magic. There are fresh new projects that work. We'll be looking for them! (Send any tips my way! Post in the Comments below!)

I'll bring a laptop and my faithful minidigicam and post discoveries as we find them and as well bump into wireless connections.

The first big new adventure in this adventure is that we bought a new car! ...New to us, that is.

A 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 4-door, candy apple red! Yes, it's Lansing pride---a day late and a dollar short but I fly it when I can!

It was literally a little old lady's car. She drove it to the hair salon and doctor each week, so it stayed lubed up. 20,000 miles for $3700. Mint condition. Here's an online pic I grabbed off the google...

We'll soon get it properly stickered up and racked.

It supposedly gets 30mpg! Yet it seems quite spacious, at least compared to foreign cars of similar fuel economy.

(Didja know that the big bench-seat LeSabre gets 28mpg? And can still tow with its famous 3800 V6? Someday we'll miss what we had... Like, TOMORROW! ...If not sooner.)

We're going to be travelling light.

But Martha and Lucy are inspired by the Tandem Family that rode through town recently. They said, We'll pack just like they did!

We'll bring sleeping bags, tent, pads, stove, small (small) cooler and a dufflebag each. No bikes this time, it looks like. But we might get that old white rocket box onto it that I've had stashed in the garage... We could go and stay light, but one of my unc's says he has cases of ammo to give me...

Here we go!

Hey Jeff! Have a safe and fun trip. Our best memories from our California vacation are from the drive out and back. 3 adults and 3 kids loaded in a short Dodge Caravan with an old Sears x-cargo on the roof. Good times. Looking forward to the write-up.

Hey Jeff! The trip sounds sublime. Last summer in June I drove from San Francisco to the San Juan Islands...one of the finest roadtrips ever. Give me a shout if you'll be traveling through the La Crosse, Wisconsin area. We have a beautiful small town here that seems to be holding up well in light of current events.
