| The Blue Sun Songbook
May 18, 2008
Mack just published a reprint of his classic underground 1970's folk songbook, "The Blue Sun." It's 8.5x11 and about 112 pages. All hand-illustrated. It features lyrics to all the songs on his "Blue Sun" CD plus tons more. The book includes a key to the tunes of these songs. I'm not a musician but Mack said anyone who can play will know how to play them after seeing the book---although I don't really see any notes per se. The book is set up developmentally, showing how the songs cover the various aspects of life, of Mack's life, as they roll along: The Tradition; The Dreamer; The Rambler; The Street Singer; The Lover; The Rebel; The Exile; The Sky Singer. He handwrites an essayish song to kick off each section. Man, it's something!
As I say in the "Blue Sun" listing, Mack busked around the world playing these songs, for decades, carrying his HEAVY steel dobro all the while. This music is in the vein of swamp blues, Guthrie, Kerouac and the cosmos. A unique blend. A rare contribution. Get it here only. Hard to believe isn't it. But have I ever shown you something that's not good, that's available any old place? (Of course, I'm going to try to make it all more readily available. We'll see how that goes...)
