Roadfood , by Jane and Michael Stern. The only book about quality Mom & Pop joints to eat at in the US. Scanty and somewhat out of date, but it's all there is. I'll publish my own big directory asap. Help save American restaurants and travel from the chains and the glitterati!

Bull Cook and Authentic Historical Recipes and Practices by George Leonard Herter, Berthe Herter / Published 1995 (Hard to Find) ---Craziest cookbook in the world. Full of bizarre historic notes, as well as wild insights into the world's fine dining scene of the 1960's. The author was clearly a gourmand, who knows his stuff, but he's a lot more, too...enough to make anyone worry I bet. Even Pappa Hemingway and Napolean, two who he seemed quite familiar with. Oh, Herter also ran the world's biggest sporting goods empire and catalog, full of cheap magnificent stuff. All of it collectible now. Abercrombie and Fitch for the poor man, with gusto. Catalog full of wild hyperbole. Oh, and the cookbook, like all Herter books, was self-published (now reprinted) and released in many wild editions (all gold embossed). Sold in the millions supposedly, but coulda never been published elsewhere. Viva self-publishing!
