Mysteries It's not the boring wasteland you might think, if you haven't read the titles I'm about to present. I've read some of the popular writers: ha. They call that writing? Formula pablum. Even Mr. Fancy Tony Hillerman. The only good mysteries are from Florida writers or Europeans. Maybe a couple others, a couple Britishers, but they never did anything for me. Florida/Euro mysteries are good because they're modern, gritty, realistic and smart, they push the envelope. They're better fiction than most fiction. Who cares about the crime at hand. See what socialism has done to us. How are we to be civilized in the face of modernism? Watch a few good guys try to tough it out and be stand-up guys in the face of this. Carl Hiassen, James Lee Burke, John D. MacDonald, Charles Willeford, Lawrence Shames, and Elmore Leonard are the cornerstone of the Florida guys. (They don't really have to be from Florida.
