Neat Fitness Idea… The Turkish Getup

Since the boom of the web, all kinds of amazing fitness ideas have been easy to stumble across online.

I recently went from the Primal Blueprint (low-carb, caveman fitness) blog — which is radical enough, five-toe shoes and all — to a link to the CrossFit blog — which has all these online fitness challenges mostly using bodyweight routines, kettlebells and sweepers, to a video of an older guy doing these gungho Turkish Getups with a kettlebell. Whew! I’d never heard of a TGU, as the extreme fitness and MMA (ahem) blogs call it. Have you?

I’m partial to all-body quick-to-do fitness ideas and the TGU seems right in line with that.

For instance, I kinda like heavy bag action. Ax chopping and log-splitting is good, too. But I also once posted a link to a guy who does Sledgehammer Workouts, swinging and whacking that way. If you hit a tire with a sledge that can be pretty good.

I’ve long had a sense that the Core needs to be kept up. Biking, boating and skiing alone are way too uni-dimensional.

Certainly, one needs to throw in some Contra or Swing Dancing.

Anyway, with the TGU you lay on the floor, hold a weight up then get up, then get back down. Simple and sweet.

There are a TON of vids showing it, but here’s a decent, brief, popular one from the “Mt-Bike Strength Coach,” so even bikers are onto it.
