Velodrome Background

Have you visited Michigan’s sweet new velodrome yet? It’s worldclass! And it’s in a public park. Check out its website, find a day of racing, and go and watch. It’s better than any stadium sport! …It’s top sport, up close and personal, out in the fresh air, sitting on green grass.

This track specializes in the classic Madison racing, where teams sling each other into the action. The pinnacle is the Six Day. Teams are developing here in Michigan that go over to race the pro circuit in Europe.

I did a Madison once, I’m happy to say! What a blast!

…If you fancy yourself an up’n’coming bike racer, well, you can’t get ANY better edge on your rivals in such a SHORT time than by showing up at the track for one of their skill-learning sessions. They provide the bike. First time is free, after that your benefits are priceless. (But I bet they’re also darn cheap.) Give yourself 4 sessions to DOUBLE your road skills. There’s nothing to worry about. The dozens of bike games, skills and drills you’ll learn are a delight. You’ll simply come away with a bucketful of skills you can’t get any other way. …And road racing situations and solutions will now be clear as day to you and you’ll have the confidence to do what it takes. Your security on the road will be unrivaled. Nuthin’ like it!

(The skill that comes in second-place to track racing is motor-pacing, if you really want a one-two punch that only, what, a few percent of racers bother to acquire. What a bonus for those who can put two’n’two together!)

This velodrome is the only one in the USA that was built by volunteers. And I’m happy to say that I drilled in bolts on a section of the track surface for a day. Looks like it’s still smooth!

It was designed and is honcho’ed by Olympic velodrome builder Dale Hughes.
