[3 of 10.] Just a few quick pics… I’m being rushed outta the motel room by starving people… [UPDATE: I got a chance on 7/7 to add some pics and details.]

We got hit by big hail in east Colorado then got a motel room in Limon. Beautiful car hood dented by hail.

Zoomed into Boulder. (Beware the toll road leading from east of Denver to Boulder! $10!) We hung out a bit in my old town, saw my old apartments. They might still be cheap! But they’d both be fine. Nice town.

Pearl Street Mall rocks as hard as ever. Convivial folks hanging out together everywhere. I bet there are more adults chatting together outdoors in public here per capita than anywhere else. That seems neat. Sure, the income is high so many have the free time to do this, but it’s also a reason people come here. I know that some do without to get this kind of sociability.

It’s a bit like a beach town. Without the surf. What do they do? I know it’s the Fittest Town in America, but the nearest features are hiking trails…which aren’t very crowded. It may well be gym-ism. The climbing is famous, too, but it’s not for EVERYONE. Just *being in* Boulder is big, I tell ya. And getting around by bike is very common. But I suppose it’s a town of Trips. Lotsa people who live here Go Places. Well, there ya have it!

I even got a brief glimpse of my old housemate, Frank Coffman, the mask man, looking good in a straw hat on a cruiser, but he was around the corner and gone before I could catch him…

Then we hit the road again and got into the mountains. Visited my old town of Breck briefly. (No one was interested.) Pushed on.

Slept in the city park in Meeker. (Ha!) Teens circled all night long, but my earplugs saved me.

Pushed thru Utah and now we’re in a motel room in Elko, Nevada, with the Mining Convention.

We had lamb dinner at a Basque family style hotel dining hall. The one in Gardnerville by Tahoe is far better.

We should get to my unk’s place in Susanville after lunch sometime.

We’ve listened to the entire “Swiss Family Robinson” book-on-tape to get us across the West. Unabridged. It should’ve been heavily abridged. It seemed like the writer was paid by the word. There were maybe 2-3 times as many words as were needed. Fluffy padding! It was also hilarious in its imperialist gore. Mother always had everything Just So. The lads killed or tamed everything they saw. Usually some of both. “The brilliant plumage of the dead flamingos was spattered with gore. Two chicks survived the onslaught of Fritz’s gun and the dogs and were saved and well nourished and soon ran happily to their masters calls and grew into a tame flock.” Actually, that was just a lame attempt. The original is far more outrageous and had us parroting it for awhile. “Capitol shot, my son! Give a shout and see if the mother has supper ready!” There was no squabbling either. Oh my!

Here are some fresh pics I uploaded on 7/7:

Ye Olde Pearl Street Mall (the trees are much bigger than when I lived here in the mid-80’s…

Check out the bar, “Tonic,” that’s now just a few feet away from where I used to live…

The bridge over Boulder Creek near the library, which also spans the bridge. See convivial people in background….

Very nice fixie hipster bike near Mall; a Merckx with leather appointments… and baggie against the dew

Architected workspace in University Bikes shop…

Employee bike rack at University Bikes… $50k worth?

Neat old drug store (being revived) and cafe, in Meeker. “Moxie” found his way into the pics for awhile…

Rest area in Dinosaur, CO. It even had showers!

Marveling at the salt of the Great Salt Flats…

Now, back to the first few pics I uploaded while on the road…

ASpen along I-70 in the Rockies. Actually, they’re being NUKED by the beetles and so are the pines. Like, maybe half the trees in the mts are toast. Messes up roads’n’trails bigtime, too. Gives a new red tone to the mountainside. …But new trees are growing in… Rainy days of driving…

Lunch along Boulder Creek. Lotsa folks strolling together, chatting, in Boulder.
