People say it’s cold in winter and there’s nothing to do.

It’s been a sunny week for skiing around here.

I visited Rose Lake and enjoyed skiing for about a mile on the wide open swamp dotted with muskrat houses. Some beavers have also moved in along the shores. They’re somehow keeping bits of water open to get in and out and fetch more nibblin’ wood.

A larger open area near shore (10 x 10 feet, say) has big dogfish rising up and gulping air like whales. Their prehistoric heads rear out of the water and their toothy jaws work as they gulp a breath.

Best of all is a half mile long ridge overlooking the winding Vermillion Creek down about 50 feet below.

My bro and I keep a huge hill cleared in the woods near Woodbury road. It’s normally not used. Too steep. I was surprised to see some weird tracks going out to it. I peeked over the edge and saw some snowboard turns running down to a HUGE kicker jump built near the bottom. Looks pretty pro.

Beavers are keeping little spots open near shore so they can get out and waddle around to tender twigs.

I really like the narrow, tricky ridge trail that overlooks the creek valley.

A mile of wide open skiing where you can get a tan and see a whole lot of critter tracks. But only try it when it’s been in the teens at night (at least) for a week.
