There’s an approx. 100-acre forested area with modest rolling hills south of the MSU campus in the area bounded by the I-96 freeway and Hagadorn, College and Sandhill roads. It’s called the Allen Woodland and it’s googleable.

There is already a network of 2-track trails on the lightly-used property.

Some MSU folks and I skied it a few weeks ago to take a look around.

It’s in the initial stages of being considered for improved access and use as a close-to-campus mt-biking trail system as well as a cross-country running training ground. Right now, there’s no trail near MSU where you’re allowed to ride your mtbike. MSU is pro-actively increasing their green status so a trail and its related maintenance projects is a viable consideration and this land has been mentioned.

I don’t know the exact status of the land, but I think it’s open to recreational use. (We also saw orienteering markers nailed up here and there.) However, there’s not really any good parking access at this point.

If you want to hike or ski out there, you’d be responsible for your own parking. That is, shoveling out your own parking space, or something.

The potential for one-car parking at this time is a small pull-out by a gate off of Sandhill Rd.

The property is just east across the road from the MSU organic farm project.
