Ice-Cities of the Great White North

I didn’t know that ice-culture was as big as it is until recently so maybe not everyone else knows either. So here ya go.

Where I live we have ice-fishing and people drive cars on the ice sometimes. That’s the extent of it.

In the REAL Great White North they go MUCH FARTHER with their ice culture.

They don’t just put ice-shanties out on the ice, oh no, they haul out trailerhomes! Out on lakes! They call em “sleeper houses”—some sleep up to a dozen and are actually lodges out on the ice. Heck, I think that people even avoid paying rent in this way! REALLY! They just live on the ice all winter, scot free! There are lodges for fishermen out on the ice that hold a dozen people. They have big holes in the floors for fishing…and for sewage, I imagine. (Possible?) I didn’t see ads or mention of any of this until I drove through north Minnesota awhile back. It must not be weird to them up there, but it surprised me and I’ve been in yooperland A LOT. I don’t think they do it in Michigan—our ice must not get thick enough.

The next freaky thing is that they supposedly reroute roads across the ice officially! They plow the ice! Like, when a road normally goes miles out of the way to go around a like, well, when it freezes, they just drive straight across the lake. Maybe they even put signage up.

OK, that’s enough for now. Both things just seem crayzee to me, and I’m already pretty far gone.
