Old Dog Learns New Trick

Our GWP, Daisy, who is 13 years old, learned a new trick in the past month or so and we didn’t even know it.

Awhile ago Martha started giving her a little doggy treat whenever she comes back to the house promptly after going out for a brief necessity.

We just figured it out that Daisy has been wanting to go outside a lot lately. And is real happy to do so. She goes out, looks around, then WAITS TO BE CALLED. …So she can obey perfectly, come back in and…GET A TREAT.

She’s learned that she doesn’t always get a treat just when she comes back nicely on her own and gives a wuff, but she always does when she responds to Martha calling her, so she waits for the call.

By the way, last year she was ailing badly, very weak in the hind end. None of the anti-inflam arthritis meds seemed to help and they said Xrays and neurologic testing next. Yeah, right. To be avoided. (You should have a good job if you have a dog.) She wasn’t stiff, just weak. But we tried some fancy med and it eventually started working. Metacam. We now buy it online at half price (with the help of a relative who has a vet license). We call it Puppy Medicine. This stuff has turned Daisy into a pup again. The thing is , she’s still weak in the rear. It seems to have an antidepressant or stimulant in it as well. It’s a little embarrasing. Like seeing a 60-yr-old without wrinkles.

Well, she’s sweet and we’re glad to have her. Even though she’s gun shy and her supposed “rough use” fur coat has fallen apart, is thin and has always attracted all the burrs and gunk in the world, complete with snowballs between toes to impair winter walks.
