Nifty Sailing Kayak

I love a versatile boat. A kayak with a sail option is one such critter. The Triak is a neat new offering along these lines—it has built-in outriggers—that even have lifting foils.

This thing is fast and stable. There aren’t many truly light, car-toppable boats that you can use to go places on big water.

I find the range of a kayak to be 10 miles. Around Michigan that doesn’t really get you to the next town. An efficient sail, however, adds range and makes it totally doable to hop from town to town. Even a 30-mile day is a big step up and gives a lot more of a sightseeing aspect to very-small boating.

Many boaters start small, go big, then back to small. Small gets used more. Small works. It’s exponentially cheaper, for one thing; and easier in every way. Yet I’ve read there’s a huge trend today to ginormous, pricey—status—boats: whups! A kayak with outriggers isn’t that; it’s an everyman’s adventure craft.
