"Off to the Races"---great kids bike book!
[$12, postpaid in the US.] I just discovered this super neat kids bike book---"Off to the Races" by Fred & M. Phleger, a husband and wife team. Hardcover, 8x10, 63 pages.
A bike pal just rediscovered it at his mom's house and suddenly remembered first being sparked up for biking by reading it when he was a kid. He'd forgotten all about it until now.
The story and artwork shows a world of convivial, versatile cycling in all its glory and detail.
You'll be astonished! It's a tale of older and younger brothers that starts with board track racing, moves on to randonneur hostel riding, and riding to the races, and ends with cyclocross over a stone wall. Yes, our heroes even take off their racks, lights and fenders to compete in the weekend's racing. It's a culture we'd do well to emulate, eh? I'm just tickled to offer this title.
It's a beginning reader's book but both the story and the artwork will charm an adult. The reading level says ages 4-8.
Here are a couple scans from inside the book:
