Michigan’s 3 Big Writers on Stage Together for 1st Time!

You are currently viewing Michigan’s 3 Big Writers on Stage Together for 1st Time!

This Thursday. July 10. 7:30. Pasant Theatre, Wharton Center at Michigan State University. Free. Limited seating, first come.

For the first time ever, live on stage, Jim Harrison, Tom McGuane and Richard Ford rock the house.

They’re doing a moderated discussion followed by a book signing.

Cool!

I’ll be there.

As an aside…

I note that in a collection of Harrison’s interviews one thing stands out: he says over and over again that a writer doesn’t stand a chance today. The culture thirsts for the real deals but the system offers no chance, no hope. The only options, Jim says, are teaching and screenplays.

This is a message that the ULA also proclaims. So we’re not the only ones to raise this concern. And maybe we’re even on to something. Except we say that there’s a way out. The key is in writers and readers alike joining together to raise a louder voice than we can on our own—to demand that truly indy writers be given a place at the table. Right now they’re as free as anyone to live under a bridge. We’re not talking about many writers. Just one would be a start. No gimmes—fair competition with the others. We says there’s no need for teaching or screenplays if we’re loud enough. And if we dare to produce relevant work for a change. (See the Products > Literature section here or ulapress.com.)
