On Being Poor

They say you either have time or money. The big joke about being poor is that you have neither.

Too broke to fix the car and no time to do it yourself.

To have an option, a choice—time or money—isn’t poor. The poor have no choices.

The rich, though, do seem to often give up their time in exchange for money. That’s how they see it anyway. But according to Marx… they don’t have the choice. They’re doing what they’re told. If they didn’t take the money they’d be poor. Money is the boss, says ol’ Karl. It has beat out Time.

I still like how my philosopher friend got real deep when he described what it’s like to own a house: “It’s a work farm and a money pit.” That made me laugh. It’s a chestnut I hadn’t heard in awhile but it’s true. A house isn’t one thing or another, it’s BOTH.

When you’re in a both/neither situation is when you know you’re well and truly nailed. Caught between a rock and a hard place then hammered into the ground. From there, the sky’s the limit! You’ve realized that life as you know it sucks! Time to grow. The old wineskin has no more stretch to it. Time for something you haven’t imagined.
