Project: Combo Animal Ornaments…and Targets!

We have a country yard that has a woodsy natural section and some trails in it. I’ve put bird-baths and other lawn ornaments out here and there over the years. We’ve always had a range for archery and bb-gun targets.

I’ve always wanted one of the 3D buck deer targets to practice archery on. But I’ve also thought that it would be nice to have a deer lawn ornament. Why not kill 2 birds with one stone?

Most folks just stick their 3D archery buck out in some shooting lane and fire away—often with haybales behind it.

I’m thinking I would use a more natural approach and set my deer off to the side so at a quick glance it would look like a real deer. For archery practice one would want to be VERY sure of making a good shot. Seems like a good idea to me.

But I why stop there? We like all the kinds of animals. –To look at, to eat, to enjoy their furs.

I think it would be super to get a half dozen different 3D foam animals and stash them along our walking trails. This would create nice views for everyone going outside. And it would make for great target practice.

I’d do both archery and pellet-gun practice on the targets. (I don’t know if pellet hits can be evaluated on these targets but it’s worth a try. Often I can visually know if I’ve made a good bb-gun shot. Hit-sounds help, too.)

It would be neat to put the targets in natural settings that require tricky archery skills—at the same time to make sure there’s no real problematic objects behind or near any target. I could use a set of arrows with fluoro paint tagging them.

Basically, I’d have my own 3D course. And enhance my yard beauty at the same time.

I’d love to have all sorts of neat critters out there peaking at everyone.

I’m thinking of the following:

*buck deer

*strutting turkey

*raccoon

*fox

*woodchuck

*bobcat

…But you can’t really get these items for less than $50 each. The bigger ones tend to go for $100. Still, I think it’d be worth it someday.
