I like fur.
It’s gorgeous, highly functional, lasts decades (far longer than a meal, to be sure), accepts top spot on the eco-chain, and is sustainable (unlike plastic) and humane in multiple respects, including when harvested in the wild (and possibly when farmed animals are kept in good conditions).
But it seems like the best of all fur would be recycled.
Both my OYB project and Martha’s Lazygal project are about recycling. Why make new stuff when what’s there is already good?
A recycled fur project would seem to fit in.
I’m talking roadkill fur.
Here are jillions of animals tragically killed on our motorways. (Many times small critters, turtles and such are intentionally hit, I tend to think, as I think that by’n’large critters are fairly easy to avoid.) Why should these losses to our world be wasted? When reasonable and seasonable, both meat and fur could be put to wonderful use.
So, I look forward to learning how to tan hides and fur…and to making my own fox, mink and raccoon hats, to start.
Maybe I could also trim some of the thrift/vintage/military-surplus items that I resell in such fur. Parkas could use it on their hoods.
Then if anyone gives asks you about your fur (or gives themselves license to take umbrage) you can say it was roadkill salvaged as a celebration of the animal.
