The New Homeless: "Urban Outdoorsman"

January 27, 2010

A park nomad reported on in this link has a new term for his homelessness: "I prefer to be called an urban outdoorsman."

He's different from some "bums": he lives in a tent deep in Golden Gate Park...and keeps his stuff in his car and has a full-time job and a laptop and cellphone with headset which he uses for his internet job where he gets paid thru PayPal...

He's doing it to save money and get money ahead, to put together a nest egg after losing his apartment when his wife left and he couldn't afford teh rent.

He's in a minority but according to the story about 20% of the homeless are employed, a fair-sized number.
