The OYB scene is all about DIY.

Here’s the bike jersey concept:

So, take charge, take ownership, of what you do. Don’t just do it because everyone is doing it and there’s a convenient line to stand in. Don’t just take anyone’s word for it. Go see for yourself.

There’s no irony either. OK, a little. It’s kinda funny. Like “Team Independent.” Get it?

But we can all work together. We do need our friends. And teachers. To do the DIY thing. No one has to reinvent a single gosh-darn wheel. A DIYer can buy a bike or whatever—but he does give props to those who make their own and he does live as close to the source as he can wherever it works for him. Someday he might just try to braze a bike frame. Or might whittle a longbow. Or put together a kayak kit. It all counts.

It’s good to make things yourself and it’s scary when we let corporations do everything for us. But of course we can’t do it all and of course corporations are good for some things (like the utilities and steel-making). We sensibly defer to people who know what they’re doing. But in the DIY world we make up our own minds about who we think knows something. We trust plenty of people. –After getting to know them.

I use the OYB family of websites to promote the DIY worldview. I’ll constantly put up ideas and info you can use to create more DIY in your life.

To celebrate DIY even more, if there’s any interest I’d be game to produce a “Team D.I.Y.” embroidered outline patch—a bit like varsity letters—that you can sew onto anything that’s YOURS. (Like on the back of your homemade Woolrich ultimate winter riding jacket or a sweater or tweed blazer.) (They’ll cost probably about $10. They’ll be sizeable. Maybe 4″x10″ of quality embroidery—made by a friend.)

I might also silkscreen up some seersucker shortsleeves with our colors. Or produce a Team DIY bike jersey. Or hat. Or sticker. Ya never know. I like to start with a concept. But then pretty soon I put the bricks under it.

UPDATE 9/06: No interest shown yet. I still like the idea.

I’ve started by pointing the URL “https://TeamDIY.com” to the OYB Projects section.

Enjoy Team DIY—it’s yours!

Would you like an outline patch something like this? (Maybe $10)
