How to Succeed in Bike Racing

If you want to succeed in road bike racing there are a few things you should do.

I understand that times change but I’m pretty sure my tips are still on top.

But first, what’s new? Zwift in the offseason and watt-meters. OK, fine, do that. But don’t stop there. If you add my list, you’ll rise above. Here’s my list:

1. Get a coach. Firstly, they need to teach you skills, then tactics. After that they can help you monitor your training. If they don’t start w 1 skills, 2 tactics, find another coach. (Obviously, coaching has to happen in person.)

2. Ride the track. Drive to your local velodrome and learn to play all the games. There’s likely a coach present and willing to help you, too. You don’t need to own a track bike. Velodromes usually rent them cheap.

3. Motorpace. …Behind a motorcycle. Read up on it.

4. Do cyclocross in the fall. This will set you up for all your bike handling needs, esp in the weather.

5. If you live in a cold winter place, do XC skiing if at all possible. Also learn and do speed skating if you have ice. These are both the best cross training. Also, in winter ride a fixie. Do weights.

Do these things and I bet you’ll rise above those who are just focusing on Zwift and watts. You can do those, too — but don’t forget the 5 tricks above!
