How to Get Fit for Skiing If You Missed Training Earlier

it’s gonna be ski season soon, it looks like. how to get ready?

first, if you’re not ready, you need a time machine. so you can start gradually and easily building up from the summer or early fall. ha, sorry.

joking aside, here are a few things you can do for a quick fix: make sure you start doing something every day. for ANY amount of time. ANY is far better than nothing.

that something wants 3 parts: use your legs, arms and core.

how to do that easiest?

for your legs, go out for a run or hike using ski poles. or just go for a trail run or hike. or a walk. carry a rucksack, why not. …that’s your legs. start short if you haven’t been doing it then add more each day. even just walking around the block wd be awesome. SOMETHING! (ideally, include UPHILLS or stairs.)

for your arms, do chair dips. what would also be awesome is to tie inner tubes up in a tree or up in some basement joists then pull on them for a minute. dont overdo it or you might not do it again. just do some. again, anything is better than nothing.

for your core, do crunches. bicycle-crunches. what would also be awesome is if you grab your hanging inner tubes and do side-twist pulls and chopping motions and crunches without using your arms.

it doesn’t matter how many you do of any of this, just do some. every day.

these things will make your first outings more doable. you wont get as tired as fast. meaning on the 2nd or 3rd day of snow you’ll still feel like going out for some glide! fitness lets us ski NOW. it also lets us ski TOMORROW. if we don’t do anything, we’ll run out of steam in a half hour on the first day of fun. …and we’ll be too tired the next day to try it again. we might even miss out on evening fun coz we’ll need to take a nap or go to bed early. skiing uses more energy so we need to ramp up to that or we’ll end up tuckered out quick. …then you’ll have to remember for next year.

it’s always best to start NOW! …far better than not.

this level of fitness is of course a bare minimum. you’ll be able to play in the winter. but you won’t be able to charge around or go long or very zesty. but at least you’ll be able to get out. like for a casual half hour rather than a gungho 2 hours. you can finish the winter leaner and stronger and set up nicely for an awesome summer and fall of getting ready for an even more awesome next winter.

…also, do your own leaf raking, and leaf pile dragging. and snow shoveling. and wood splitting. that will help a lot, too.
